Pilonidal sinus surgery

Pilonidal surgery refers to procedures used to treat pilonidal cysts, which are abnormal skin growths that typically form near the tailbone. These cysts can become infected, causing pain, swelling, and drainage. Surgery aims to remove the cyst and any associated infected tissue.
Types of  Surgery:
Incision and Drainage (I&D):
A minor procedure to drain the cyst and relieve immediate symptoms, but it may not prevent recurrence.
Pilonidal Cystectomy:
Surgical removal of the cyst and surrounding tissue, aiming for a more permanent solution. This can be done with open surgery or minimally invasive techniques.
Limberg Flap/Gluteal Flap:
Involves removing a larger area of tissue and using a flap of skin to close the wound, often for more extensive or recurrent cases.
Endoscopic ablation:
A minimally invasive approach using an endoscope to clean the sinus and promote healing.
Cleft-lift procedure:
A technique that aims to flatten the buttock crease, remove the sinus, and promote healing away from the midline.
When is surgery needed?
Surgery is typically recommended when a pilonidal cyst becomes infected, causing pain, swelling, or drainage. It can also be considered for recurrent cysts or when conservative treatments are not effective.
